One of my favorite Christmastime perks: Chex Mix aplenty around the house.
Christmas dinner! Salad with homemade vinaigrette, garlic and honey-glazed turkey breast, spanish rice with vegetables and steamed broccoli. The rice dish knocked everyone’s socks off. It was like a come-from-behind victory, considering how tender and juicy the turkey was. Again, kudos to the Missus. If my parents didn’t love her to death before, they certainly do now. Or at least their stomachs and taste buds do!
The best Christmas Eve feast I can remember. The Missus and my mom cooked all day, it seemed. And the hard work paid off — an Iowa pork loin, surrounded by potatoes and onions, black beans and rice, and a salad of arugula and spinach. No one angrily stormed away from the table! That’s a successful family holiday dinner if I ever did see one. But those black beans were so good I have a feeling they’re going to be haunting my taste buds’ memories like Jacob Marley’s ghost next year…
The Missus went over and beyond this morning with breakfast before we gathered to open Christmas presents. First is a photo of the souffle in the oven, before it fell back to earth. Then, my plate, showing the souffle, fruit, bacon and cinnamon bun slices.
Two slices of my mom’s famous pound cake and a large scoop of mint cookie ice cream. Every year I forget how good that pound cake is. (Don’t tell anyone, but I sneaked a third slice… Don’t judge. It’s Christmas.)
Every year before Christmas my sister and her family send me a plastic tub of the most amazing chocolate treats. I lucked out having the day off today, so I could greet the package at the front door when the postman rang the bell. Score.
