Some good friends of ours in Evanston organized a dinner party, including us and two other couples.
It started with a short-but-to-the-point tour of the FEW distillery, which included a sampling of five spirits. That put the eight of us in a good mood when we returned to the host’s house for a taco fiesta. I had three tacos — one with ground beef (that was probably meant for the children at the kids table) and two with the pulled pork. Slow-cooked, and with a spicy pepper sauce drizzled on top. Delicious.
Some homemade guacamole made by one of the guests was noteworthy in its awesomeness and was almost completely eaten before dinner was served.
The Missus made a peach pie, with a little bourbon in the sauce, for dessert. When one of the ladies at the party spooned out a dab of Cool Whip onto my slice, I called her “The Trollop with the Dollop,” which was not well received. And I wonder why I don’t get invited to more parties in mixed company…
Edzo’s Burger Shop in Evanston is always a good thing.
Picked up a buddy at noon, asked where he wanted to go, he shrugged his shoulders and said, “Edzo’s? Is that alright?” Of course it is. No brainer.
I got a peanut butter malt, a double griddle-burger with American cheese and “everything,” which means ketchup, tomato, pickle and onion. Oh, and my buddy and I split the crazy fries, which features cheddar cheese, chili and onions. All top-notch.
If you can find a more perfect lunch, let me know. Because I don’t believe you.
With my election story finally filed, and at 10:15 p.m., I realized that I’d missed dinner for the second day in a row. Rather than going to bed hungry, I stopped at a McDonald’s in Evanston on my way out of town to grab a McChicken from the dollar menu. Eaten while driving with one knee.
Met a fellow reporter at the Celtic Knot in Evanston to chit-chat and talk local elections. I ordered a basket of the curry chips. I wasn’t all that hungry, and barely ate half of them. I can safely say that I wouldn’t order them again. Not my style of french fry — too thick and bland. And the curry sauce just wasn’t doing it for me.
Bee Bim Bop is the Friday special at Evanston Grill ($6.45), and I was lucky enough to be just down the street at the lunch hour to capitalize. Used an ample amount of the spicy sauce before mashing it all together and eating it with a spoon. When it’s been a while, I crave this dish. And even though I don’t come in here often, the Korean family that runs the place always remember me. (And their son is always incredibly grumpy.)
