Barbecue baked chicken with a big salad. A nice break in the middle of a long day.

A late lunch at Panera Bread in Wilmette, Ill. Been feeling gluttonous lately so I got the 450-calorie Asian Sesame salad. Tasty enough to make me not miss a greaseball burger-and-fry combo.

The Missus cooked the pork chop and grilled onions. I made the salad.

Happened to be in Morton Grove today around the noon-hour and stopped on a whim at Marilyn’s Restaurant. Pretty simple family diner type place. Strangely, I ordered the Santa Fe chicken salad. Probably not the house specialty. It was fine. Nothing stupendous, but not bad. I knew I’d misfired with my order when I tried those pita points — really, really good. Should have known to get something Greek in a Greek-owned diner. Or at least not something Southwest…

Rigatoni pasta with a butternut squash and basil puree and organic spicy Italian sausage. Super delicious, but the Missus — who clearly created this masterpiece — was a little bummed that my appetite seemed to dwindle after I’d eaten all the sausage bits, leaving an ample pile of orange noodles in my bowl. She shouldn’t worry, it was awesome.

That salad? That was my creation. Nothing special, but I sliced the onion, peppers and olives into long slivers, which seemed to make it just a little bit more tasty than your average salad. (The ranch dressing and bacon bits didn’t hurt…)

As we were finishing our meal, a couple friends rang the doorbell and we all headed to the TV room to watch what turned out to be one of the most joyous Chicago Blackhawks playoff games in memory. Oh man — tying it with 5 seconds left in regulation, then winning in overtime. What a night!

A southwest chicken salad-in-a-box, from Pockets. My stomach was crying out for some roughage, after being fed a string of greasy noodles and rice dishes. This hit the spot, like it always does.
